Austin residents know that driving after they have been drinking alcohol is a serious crime. Law enforcement officials aggressively pursue those who are suspected of driving after drinking. Those who have been arrested for a DWI face serious penalties.
Recently, a DWI suspect was involved in a series of incidents in the Austin area. Police attempted to pull the suspect over on Airport Road for a suspected DWI. The driver did not stop and led the police on a chase. He eventually pulled over on Marks Street. When an officer approached the suspect's car, he allegedly put his car in reverse and knocked the officer to the ground. Another officer saw what happened and fired his weapon at the suspect's vehicle. The suspect drove off and another chase ensued, in which the suspect was eventually stopped using spike strips. The officer who was run over was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released. The suspect has been charged with DWI, evading arrest and aggravated assault against a public servant.
When a person has been arrested for a DWI it can be frightening. Law enforcement officials can make a suspect feel like they are not in control and there are many legal nuances that can be confusing. This is the time when a suspect will likely want to get more information about criminal defense legal options. Part of this is to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest and make sure their legal rights are protected.
A DWI conviction can have serious penalties. It is important for a person to know their legal protections to make sure their side of the story is heard.
